Fish species composition of Lake Albert, Uganda DataSet Details

Description:

This dataset contains fish species occurrence data for Lake Albert mobilized from archives. The data can be used as a baseline for monitoring changes in ichthyofauna diversity of the Lake Albert system in the face of oil and gas developments in the region.

Purpose:

The dataset contains occurrence records, which can be used as a baseline to monitor changes in ichthyofauna diversity of the Lake Albert system in the face of oil and gas developments in the region.

Temporal scope:

1998-2008

Taxonomic scope:

8 orders;
14 families;
29 genera;
47 species.

Methodology:

Fish sampling was carried out in selected stations, based on the knowledge of habitat preferences for fish, including Lagoons, river mouths, bays, open sandy shores, rocky escapments and deep waters (Wandera and Balirwa, 2010). At each inshore station, three sets of graded multifilament gillnets of mesh sizes 1 to 8 inches were used. Beach seines were also used in places suitable for seining. For detailed information on experimental fishing and fish species identification, please see Wandera and Balirwa (2010) in the publications page.
