Fish species occurrence and composition in selected Ugandan water bodies, 2001-2003 DataSet Details
Description:
This dataset presents occurrence records and composition of fish species collected from the Victoria and Kyoga lake basins between 2001 and 2003.
Purpose:
This dataset is part of routine monitoring of fish bioversity in Uganda's major lakes by the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute.
Temporal scope:
2001-2003
Taxonomic scope:
8 orders;
11 families;
30 genera;
78 species.
Methodology:
Sampling was conducted parallel to the shoreline off each dominant vegetation type. For each habitat type, sampling was done within 20 m from the shore and beyond, between 20m and about 70 m away from the shoreline. Fish was captured using gillnets and basket traps set overnight. Complete details of sampling are available in Mbabazi (2004). All scientific names were validated using FishBase (Froese & Pauly, 2018).
